It has come to my attention from a friend of mine that Cary Agos of The Good Wife does not have a kind fanbase. I got into The Good Wife late so I have never really followed the fandom. I have a couple friends on twitter who watch it, but we all share pretty much the same opinion on all of the characters. I guess Cary isn't liked by much of the fandom, and people want him gone, which is something I just do not get. So I wanted to take a little look into the character that is Cary Agos.
Cary is the perfect foil for Alicia, he started with her at Lockhart and Gardner and competed with her for attorney job. She beat him out of it, but then he got a job with the ASA and they used his connections to Lockhart and Gardner and assigned him to all cases that were up against them. After that, Peter Florick became ASA and made Cary his right hand man. These are all positions that are working against Alicia and they all work so perfect. He went from competing with her (but still working as a team with her), to going against her in court, to not only still going against her in court, but to also being the right hand to her pseudo ex husband. I just don't see how someone could want to get rid of such an amazing foil for the main character of the show.
The great thing about The Good Wife is that the showrunners know how to make multi-dimensional characters, so Cary isn't just Alicia's foil, he is his own person. We don't know much about Cary's personal life, we can assume that he isn't too distant from his family as he is seen showing his cousin around a college, and that he hasn't had a real girlfriend in about three years as his work always take precedent. We do know a lot about his character though, and he brings a very different side to the show. He is loyal, honest, and really wants to seek out justice, he may hate to admit when he is wrong, but if it will lead to the truth he will let it out. When given a case he tries not to make it personal so that he can be honest and find the truth in the case.
His conviction for Kalinda says it all actually. He is very much into Kalinda, which started when he worked with her at Lockhart and Gardner. She was mysterious to him and his usual boyish charm wouldn't work on her and he was intrigued. Nothing ever really came from this, but his feelings still carried over when he joined the ASA. At the ASA investigations about Kalinda started to arise and he was forced to investigate her. His feeling made it harder for him to do, but he still stuck through it; sure there were times where he fudged a couple things but he never out right did anything illegal. He also spoke the truth, which may make him look like a bad guy, but the way he used the truth was in order to help Kalinda in the long run. He wanted to help out Kalinda, but he never wanted to break his moral code, and this speaks volumes about who he is as a person.
We got to see Cary a lot more when he worked at Lockhart and Gardner, but it wasn't until the second season, when he was fully in the ASA that we really got some good material with him. Cary's move to the ASA wasn't a hard one at first, Childs wanted to use him to get the upper hand on Lockhart and Gardner. Then Peter won the election for ASA and took over. Things started to get a little rough for Cary, he thought he was being hazed, they kept moving his office around until he was finally put into one of those desks that you see at a public library that have three high walls around it. When you think he is in ally going to crack, he is taken to a very nice and big office where the plaque on the door says: Cary Agos Deputy States Attorney. He is speechless and his face shows all the wonder and amazement, this was probably Matt Czuchry’s finest moment, my heart literally swelled with so much pride for Cary and I don't think it would have been as good if Matt wasn't able to pull it off acting wise.
I'm writing this mainly to get my thoughts on Cary down on "paper" so that I can look at why people would want him off the show. I know that he can be a dick at times when he has a case against Alicia, but he has never done something that shouldn't have been looked into anyway. Alicia has gone after Cary a couple times as well, but he has swallowed his pride and taken it. Cary is a great soft antagonist, and the show wouldn't be nearly as suspenseful without him. Cary adds a level of quality to the show, that I could not see the show without him and I hope that we see him back at Lockhart and Gardner soon so that we can get more of a look inside the character.
Brilliant!
ReplyDeletePeople who want Cary out of the show should be banned from the fandom ;)
And Cary HAS a fandom. It's not the biggest or the more vocal one but he was put against the show's heroine all the time, so it's even miracolous that there are fans of the character. Those fans have also trouble posting on "The Good Wife" boards because usually they're finelly led to leave those boards from other "fans".
Said that I think there's a reason why he dosen't have the same love from fandom: writers spend too much time on his antagonist side and really too little time on his other sides to make more fans to love him. He's still the most underused and undeveloped character on the show. That's the reason why many fans don't want him out of the show. They want him at L&G again because they think writers finally will be able to show the other sides of Cary Agos.
Very well said Pat :) Cary does have a fandom, a big one! I admit to being a huge Matt Czuchry fan, even running a forum for him, and talking to other Cary fans on twitter all the time so I see how frustrated the fanbase is on a daily basis. But deep down we all have hope, that Cary will get a bigger storyline. Matt Czuchry is a great actor IMO, and deserves more then what they are giving him right now.
