Speculation on Vampire Diaries 3x17 "The Murder Of One"

Looks like its another episode of Joe speculating as to where a show might go. Vampire Diaries is probably one of the hardest to predict because just when you think they are going to zig, they zag, but lord knows I will try my damndest.

Last night’s episode of Vampire Diaries showed that the show is back on track. Everything is building again and there is more of a clear focus as to where things are going. This season has had its ups and downs; moments where the show for the first time has lost its way, but these last couple episodes have really gotten the show back on track.

The biggest revelation of the night would be that when an Original dies every vampire that was sired through their bloodline is also killed. We found this out after Matt Donovan (aka Everyone’s favorite home town hero) was the one to stake Finn with a white oak stake, through a plan of Stefan’s devising. This sets Sage, his lover, off on a vengeance attack towards Stefan where once she starts attacking him her body grows weaker and she begins to die, shortly after that, a vampire she has sired starts going through the same phases. This has to be one of the best and most ingenious things that The Vampires Diares has done to date since the Sun and Moon Prophecy (and its fallout). Now we know that Stefan, Damon, and Caroline were sired by Katherine,  but we do not know what Original she is linked to. Also, Caroline confirms that since Tyler was made a hybrid by Klaus that if they kill him then Tyler will also die.

A way to get around this would be to dagger the Original linked to Katherine, as well as Klaus and then get rid of the others so that they wouldn't be able to pull the dagger out. The only problem with that is that an Original can only be stabbed with a silver dagger by a non demon, which means only the human characters can do it. Now Matt has an Original kill under his belt, so I can see him helping with that, Elena has used the dagger twice now, once on Elijah and once on Rebekah, so they could work together to get one of them. Elena was only able to dagger them because she had their trust and used it to turn on them, and I cannot see Klaus trusting her enough given her history, though she could use the fact that she holds the key to his hybrids and get him that way, but we'll have to wait and see who the Original linked to Katherine is. If it's Elijah or Rebekah (which it most likely will be, because it would ensure their return to the show and be used whenever the writers really wanted them), then she could use her bond with Elijah again to stab him, though if it is Rebekah that will be a lot harder to do. Elijah however does seem like he just wants to live a peaceful life, so I could see him striking up a deal in order to stay alive. Rebekah is definitely more of a wild card that wants to live so I could see her being the one linked to Katherine in order to create a more intense storyline.

There is one more human that could be in the running to kill the Originals, and that is Alaric. We also learned in last night’s episode that Bonnie's potion for Ric isn't working and that his homicidal side is still coming out when Ric goes to find the stake and it is gone. Now there is a Vampire Hunter with no remorse for what he does that has the only stake to kill an Original. Though my guess is that he will go after Kol with it since Kol really hasn't been in the front of storylines so he is a safe one to kill, his death won’t destroy anyone else’s storyline, but it can still be used to further Alaric's.

Or another option would be for Bonnie to try and find a spell that would unlink the bond between an Original and their sire line. Given the spell that Bonnie performed tonight this could be some well foreshadowing as to what she could do, and coupled with the possibility of Dark Magic taking over a witch in the last episode, we could very well see Bonnie try and perform the spell but it being too much for her, causing the Dark Magic to take over. In last night’s episode we saw that everything is getting too much for Bonnie, she is doing spells that are borderline too much for her, her mom has left her (again), Klaus is threatening her with killing those that she loves if she doesn't do anything that he wants her too. Bonnie still has a spot in her heart for Jeremy and Klaus is using his life to get her to do what she wants. When Bonnie broke down outside of Klaus' mansion, it now looks like we are actually getting a clear point of view for Bonnie which has been severely lacking this season. I'm not saying that this is definitely the way things are going to go, but it certainly looks like it. However, if nothing actually does come from this I will be severely disappointed because the storyline is RIGHT THERE. RIGHT THERE. Bonnie deserves this. Bonnie fans who have stuck around deserve this.

The other big revelation of the night? Jeremy has a dog in Denver and remains incredibly adorable with it.

This episode may have been very one track, but it was needed in order to get the show back on track, give it something more than just a love triangle again. I am now back in the frame of mind in needing a new episode right away, it hurts having to wait another week when the show has gotten so good again.
