Pretty Little Liars Season 2 Finale Review/Speculation

Last nights episode of Pretty Little Liars was the most intense episode of the entire series. It answered some questions, but opened a brand new door of possibilities. Obviously there are spoilers of the episode ahead, so if you haven't seen it, you probably shouldn't be reading this.

We open up with them letting us know that it has been a full week since Garrett was arrested. The girls also know that Jenna is the one that turned in Garrett thanks to Spencer’s mom being connected. The biggest part of this scene though, is where Melissa reveals to the girls that she and Garrett know how Jenna was blinded.

The girls are invited to a masquerade party (I am SUCH a sucked for masquerade balls). 'A' wants them to give them back their phone by midnight or she threatens to put one of them in a body bag.

"Hide and Seek was my favorite game to play with Melissa growing up. Wanna know why? I always won." GET. IT. SPENCER.

I like the nice throwback to Spencer and Melissa's academic rivalry. Mona is once again abandoned by the girls and you can see that it is getting to her, she just wants to hang out.

Ezra had sex with Aria. Officially. Awesome, he is now a felon. Orange ain't cute on you Ezra. The girls then find a motel that is in the middle of nowhere and could possibly be where Ali was. So of course, being the smart girls that they are, they take off to it. I have found that the only times that I really enjoy Aria is when her and Spencer team up. I think it has to do with Spencer's natural flawlessness over spilling onto Aria... it's really the only way to describe it.

Emily gets a call from Maya but can't get reception so she leaves Hanna alone and goes outside to get a signal. It's odd that 'A' is there to go after Hanna right as Emily gets a call from Maya... and that no one is saying anything on the other end. So it would be assumed that 'A' has Maya's phone and is using it to lure Emily outside so that she could go after Hanna. Luckily Hanna gets a call and she jumps out of the shower before 'A' can do anything and 'A' runs for it.

We get a really cute Emily and Hanna scene, where they agree to be each others date to the dance. I would love to see this build in Season 3, even if they don't make Hanna a lesbian, they could have her explore this other side, have Emily as a sort of mentor for her. I don't think that they would actually go this way, but it would definitely help build a more complex character in Hanna.

So after a trip to the Bates Motel, Spencer goes to see Toby and wants him to forgive her, but he gives her the cold shoulder and she takes off. After she leaves Toby gets a call and it's from Dr. Sullivan. Toby has a secret of his own!

Jenna meets with someone at the park and lets them know that the girls will be at the dance and that they need to go there to do something to the girls. We never find out who it is, but they are going to the dance so we'll have to wait to find out who it was.

The girls arrive to the party and all look great except for Aria. Seriously, one of the other girls need to step in and teach her how to wear a dress when she is that short. Spencer goes up to Mona after she brings Caleb to the dance for Hanna and calls her a great friend. Mona then goes on to talk about what it was like before Ali died. She says that she spotted Ali in Brookhaven and that she told her a secret about what she was doing there. So Spencer and Mona take off to the motel to see if they can find more clues.

It looks like something bad is going to happen to Aria but its just a build up to Ezra showing up and wanting to dance with her. Spencer calls Emily and lets her know what is going down; that she is going to the motel to find out what is in Room 2. While Spencer is keeping the owner busy, Mona is getting the key to Room 2... And what’s in the room is...

We'll have to wait on that; instead we get "blessed" with an Ezria scene in which Ezra says that since this is their first dance, that he wants to see her. Hashtag EzriaGoesPublic. Yeah they make out with each other in front of all the other students. They are probably the smartest couple on the show. Meanwhile Emily is off trying to find 'A' and do something good, but instead gets stopped by Paige where they decide to become friends.

So the room is probably one of the creepiest things ever. A complete shrine to Alison and everything to do with her murder investigation. Along with pictures of Ali, there are some of the girls as well. It looks like A wanted nothing more than to make a skin trench coat out of Ali and wear it around town. Not very stable. Some of the pictures even have holes cut out in the eyes, and are Bratz dolls even made anymore? Spencer finds drawings of what she believes is 'A's outfit for the dance, a girl in a black swan dress. Mona offers Spencer a piece of gum, just as Spencer finds Ali's diary and a gum wrapper as a bookmark. Spencer says that Melissa has a Black Swan costume but when we see the girl in that costume she is clearly not pregnant, as Hanna says the girl is a size two, so unless Melissa is faking her pregnancy it can't be her.

Spencer finds a bag of cashmere sweaters as Mona walks in and confronts her as 'A'. Mona doesn't deny it and pistol whips the hell outta Spenc. Spencer wakes up to find herself in Mona's car as they are driving recklessly down a winding road. Mona offers Spencer her life if she joins her and the 'A-Team'. Back at the dance, the other girls find out that Hannas phone has been set to record every time it is on. Back in the car Spencer has her video chat on so that the other girls can know where she is. Mona lets Spencer know that she isn't the only genius in the car and that she is the mastermind behind everything. "its not about betrayal, its about revenge." Spencer is trying to talk Mona down and to figure out her next move so that she would know should she get out of this alive. Naturally, being the smartest one out of the group, Spencer pulls the emergency brake and hops out of the car. Hanna almost runs Mona over and then Mona freaks the hell out and attacks Spencer which leads to her falling off a cliff.

The cops are now there (the girls finally do something smart) and Dr. Sullivan shows up. We find out that Mona threatened her son and forced her to leave. She first consoles Hanna and Hanna has a break down over one of her closest friends betraying her. A cop yells out that Mona is actually alive.

Mona is now in a psych ward and we find out that she has a personality disorder and it joined with her high IQ and made her appear omnipresent. Through Mona's voiceover we find out that her getting caught is exactly what "they" wanted and now that the girls think they are safe there will be a bigger attack.

"I like this lipstick. What’s it called? Toffee Tango." This is the second time that Toffee has been mentioned in this episode. The first was when Melissa took Aria's frozen yogurt and was told that it was Toffee flavor. This is too much a coincidence for it not to actually be something. We know from the scene in the motel between Spencer and Mona that Mona knows more about Melissa than she actually should, which could leave everyone to speculate that Melissa and Mona may be in cahoots to some extent.

We next find out that Toby is the one that got Dr. Sullivan to comeback and Spencer and Toby share one of the best kisses on Pretty Little Liars. He didn't want to pretend that he wasn't in love with her, but he had to in order to save her.

Again the cops go racing by the girls and Emily see's that they are going towards her house. She races over to it and see's her mom who informs her that they found a body and the cops believe it to be Maya. She does some of her best acting in this scene. Her breakdown was so heartbreaking and almost made me care for Maya.

The last scene is Mona getting a visitor, a person in a red jacket. A jacket we have seen on Ali before...

The whole time though, I couldn't help but wonder where Ezra was. Maybe they were just trying to focus more on the girls in the finale, but it just seemed a little too suspicious that he only ever showed up at the dance. We never found out who Jenna was talking to in the park, it is definitely a possibility since Ezra and Aria randomly had a very VERY public kiss at school, perhaps that is what Jenna wanted him to do. Ezra could be working with Jenna on everything and this is their way of getting back at Aria, for getting revenge on her.

I believe that the A that was following Ali isn't the same one that was attacking the girls. Spencer thinks that Mona made up the story about Ali watching someone, but I think that she was telling the truth and Mona was just assigned to the girls. She really is A for the girls but she isn't the only one out there.

This honestly was a very well crafted episode whether or not you liked the reveal of 'A'. Marlene King kept the suspense coming time and time again and crafted a very intense episode.

Let's finish this off with what I got right in last night’s season finale of Pretty Little Liars.

1) I knew that they were making that shit up with Mona and the A texts in the last episode. It was kinda obvious.

2) Spencer was the one to catch A. Honestly though, which other girl is flawless enough to have done it? She has been the most gung-ho of the girls when it comes to catching A so it was really fitting for her.

3) A little Emily and Hanna shipping in the finale as well...will it carry on to season 3?

4) Having found out it was Mona who was A and her betraying Hanna, it's safe to say that Hanna will be eating her feelings next season. I hope you enjoy wearing 12 hoodies Ashley Benzo, because Hefty Hanna is coming back!
